What Are the 5 Elements?

The 5 elements being referred to in this article are in reference to the Five Elements Theory, Wu Xing, or Five Phases of Chinese philosophy.

The 5 elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, and Earth. It explains the interactions and relationships between phenomena and is applied in various disciplines such as I Ching, Feng Shui, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

How Do the 5 Elements Interact?

There are five directions or cycles in how the 5 elements interact. And these can be termed as Producing, Controlling, Exhausting, Injuring, and Reinforcing. The way to understand each of these directions or cycles is explained as follows.

5 Elements – Producing Cycle

The Producing Cycle goes on the flow from Metal -> Water -> Wood -> Fire -> Earth -> Metal.

5 Elements in Pythagorean Numerology - Producing Cycle

The meaning of the element interaction goes like this:

Metal Produces Water: Metal melts to become liquid

Water Produces Wood: Plants or trees need water to grow.

Wood Produces Fire: Wood is the fuel for the fire to burn.

Fire Produces Earth. As the fire burns, ashes are produced, hence Earth.

Earth Produces Metal: Earth contains metals such as gold and silver.

The essence of this cycle is that the former element will support the growth of the latter element.

5 Elements – Controlling Cycle

The Controlling Cycle goes on a flow as shown in the illustration below. It goes from Metal -> Wood -> Earth -> Water -> Fire -> Metal.

5 Elements in Pythagorean Numerology - Controlling Cycle

The meaning of the element interaction goes like this:

Metal Controls Wood: Metal can cut through wood.

Wood Controls Earth: Trees grow, and the roots hold the soil in place.

Earth Controls Water: The ground can be dug to divert the water flow to where it wants.

Water Controls Fire: Water extinguishes fire.

Fire Controls Metal: Fire at a high enough temperature can melt metal and change it into different shapes.

The essence of the Controlling Cycle is that the former element has control over the latter element.

5 Elements – Exhausting Cycle

The Exhausting Cycle goes on a flow, as shown in the illustration below. It goes from Metal -> Earth -> Fire -> Wood -> Water -> Metal.

5 Elements in Pythagorean Numerology - Exhausting Cycle

The interpretation of the element interaction goes like this and is a reverse flow of the Producing Cycle.

Metal Exhaust Earth: Machinery is used to mine the earth for minerals.

Earth Exhaust Fire: Sufficient earth can smother fire.

Fire Exhaust Wood: Fire burns wood and creates a forest fire.

Wood Exhaust Water: Too much wood will over-consume and depletes the water.

Water Exhaust Metal: Too much water will cause the metal to rust.

The essence of this cycle is that the former element will consume or receive the resources from the latter element.

5 Elements – Injuring Cycle

The Injuring Cycle goes on a flow, as shown in the illustration below. It goes from Metal -> Fire -> Water -> Earth -> Wood -> Metal.

5 Elements in Pythagorean Numerology - Injuring Cycle

The interpretation of the element interaction goes like this and is the reverse flow of the Controlling Cycle:

Metal Injures Fire: Metal conducts heat away, thus reducing the energy of fire.

Fire Injures Water: The heat from the fire will evaporate the water.

Water Injures Earth: Too much water will loosen and muddies the soil and degrades it.

Earth Injures Wood: Wood will decompose gradually over time when covered in the ground.

Wood Injures Metal: Excessive amounts of wood will eventually blunt the metal.

The essence of this cycle is that the former element will deteriorate the latter element.

5 Elements – Reinforcing Cycle

The Reinforcing Cycle refers to the interaction within the same element.

5 Elements in Pythagorean Numerology - Reinforcing Cycle

The interaction of the same element is purely where:

Metal Reinforce Metal.

Water Reinforce Water.

Wood Reinforce Wood.

Fire Reinforce Fire.

Earth Reinforce Earth.

The essence of this cycle is about harmony or balance. But too much energy from an element may also bring forth the negative aspect more easily.

How To Relate the 5 Elements in the Pythagorean Numerology System?

Each of the 9 numbers in the Pythagorean Numerology system can be related and assigned to the five elements.

Based on the characteristics or meaning of the numbers, we can relate the number to the element accordingly. The diagram below summarises this assignment.

5 Elements in Pythagorean Numerology - Corresponding Numbers

Let us now go through this correlation.

Element Metal – Numbers 1 and 6

The numbers 1 (Leader) and 6 (Sage) have the element of metal. The number 1 is about leadership, and the number 6 is about wisdom and wealth. As such, metal is representative of these two numbers.

Element Water – Numbers 2 and 7

The numbers 2 (Communicator) and 7 (Celebrity) have the element of water. The essence of the number 2 is about communication, while the number 7 is about relationships.

Water flows where it is channeled. The characteristics of water may be described as fluidity, flexibility, harmony, and the essence of life.

Engaging in communication and relationship building has the flavour of going with the flow and having trust.

As such, the numbers 2 and 7 are aligned with the water element.

Element Wood – Numbers 4 and 9

The numbers 4 (Mastermind) and 9 (Entrepreneur) have the element of wood. The essence of the number 4 is about thinking, while the number 9 is about having opportunities.

The characteristics of wood may be described as silent, unwavering, grounding, down-to-earth, and ever-growing. It is also about creation as we think about how the leaves from the trees produce air for us to breathe, enabling life to continue and prosper.

As such, the numbers 4 and 9 are aligned with the element of wood.

Element Fire – Numbers 3 and 8

The numbers 3 (Energiser) and 8 (Guardian) are associated with the element of fire. The core characteristics of the number 3 are about taking action and feeling energetic, while the number 8 is about being responsible and taking up challenges.

Fire propels action or motion. It is the fuel or energy to get things moving.

Element Earth – Number 5

The number 5 (Conqueror) is associated with the earth element.

The core characteristic of the number 5 is about being ambitious, and it encompasses behavioural traits such as being analytical, creative, adventurous and having leadership skills.

The number 5 sits in the middle of the 9 numbers. It serves akin to a pivot trying to balance both sides of the numbers 1 to 4 and 6 to 9.

It is ambitious where it tries to have or be the best of both worlds by assuming the characteristics of all other numbers whenever possible.

Like the earth, the number 5 can be stubborn and stands firm on the ground. One cannot force it to move. It decides on its own.

Universal and Personal Year, Month, and Day Numbers

As briefly mentioned, there is the Universal Year, Month, and Day calculation. And there is also the Personal Year, Month, and Day calculation.

The Universal numbers will guide us with a general direction of the energy vibration that is happening at a given time.

Personal numbers, on the other hand, help us to know our personal vibration at the same given time.

These two sets of numbers will provide us with a reference for how we may think and act so that we can strive to achieve the best possible outcome for our year, month, and day.

By understanding the meaning of what these numbers say and acting in accordance with it, we are essentially aligning ourselves to the vibrations of the universe.

Usage Of The 5 Elements In Understanding Our Universal And Personal Numbers

Our Personal numbers do not always align with the Universal numbers, and it does not need to be the case.

The guidance from our Personal numbers will suggest the thoughts and actions that we may do as an individual. The Universal numbers tell us what we may do to align ourselves with the vibrations of the universe.

What we want to know is whether the predictions or guidance from our Personal numbers are aligned to the Universal numbers.

We want to know whether our Personal number vibration is favourable towards the Universal vibration or not.

So what we can do is utilise the 5 elements to understand whether our personal vibration is favourable or unfavourable towards the universal vibration.

For example, let us assume the Personal Day is number 6 (Sage) for a person on a given day and the Universal Day is the number 9 (Entrepreneur).

The Personal Day number 6 is associated with the element of Metal, while the Universal Day number 9 is associated with the element of Wood.

The element of Metal Controls Wood. Thus, this would be a favourable direction where you should feel in control of your day.

Knowing this, plus understanding the meaning of the numbers 6 and 9 will give us an interpretation of what we should do for the day, month, or year to get an optimal result.

It can also help us to predict whether our day will be smooth or not.
