How Do the 5 Elements Interact?
There are five directions or cycles in how the 5 elements interact. And these can be termed as Producing, Controlling, Exhausting, Injuring, and Reinforcing. The way to understand each of these directions or cycles is explained as follows.
5 Elements – Producing Cycle
The Producing Cycle goes on the flow from Metal -> Water -> Wood -> Fire -> Earth -> Metal.
The meaning of the element interaction goes like this:
Metal Produces Water: Metal melts to become liquid
Water Produces Wood: Plants or trees need water to grow.
Wood Produces Fire: Wood is the fuel for the fire to burn.
Fire Produces Earth. As the fire burns, ashes are produced, hence Earth.
Earth Produces Metal: Earth contains metals such as gold and silver.
The essence of this cycle is that the former element will support the growth of the latter element.
5 Elements – Controlling Cycle
The Controlling Cycle goes on a flow as shown in the illustration below. It goes from Metal -> Wood -> Earth -> Water -> Fire -> Metal.
The meaning of the element interaction goes like this:
Metal Controls Wood: Metal can cut through wood.
Wood Controls Earth: Trees grow, and the roots hold the soil in place.
Earth Controls Water: The ground can be dug to divert the water flow to where it wants.
Water Controls Fire: Water extinguishes fire.
Fire Controls Metal: Fire at a high enough temperature can melt metal and change it into different shapes.
The essence of the Controlling Cycle is that the former element has control over the latter element.

Wood Exhaust Water: Too much wood will over-consume and depletes the water.

The interpretation of the element interaction goes like this and is the reverse flow of the Controlling Cycle:
Metal Injures Fire: Metal conducts heat away, thus reducing the energy of fire.
Fire Injures Water: The heat from the fire will evaporate the water.
Water Injures Earth: Too much water will loosen and muddies the soil and degrades it.
Earth Injures Wood: Wood will decompose gradually over time when covered in the ground.

The Reinforcing Cycle refers to the interaction within the same element.
