Finding your true purpose can be one of life’s most challenging yet rewarding journeys. If you’re searching for guidance on how to find what you want to do in life, understanding your character through numerology can provide you with some valuable insights.
While our numbers tell a story, everyone is unique so I cannot tell you exactly what you should do.
And I don’t think anyone should tell you what to do either.
But you can discover it when you understand what your numbers are telling you. Embarking on this journey of self-discovery will bring you closer to realising your purpose.
In this blog, what you will find is a run-through of the nature of the 9 Character Root Numbers where you will belong to one of them.
The Character Root Number (a.k.a. more widely known as the Life Path), indicates your primary character.
The precept in numerology is that whatever you do in life, you tend to think and act in accordance with the nature of your Character Root Number.
So it is worthwhile to understand thoroughly what your Character Root Number means.
If you can do so and be able to resonate, acknowledge and connect with your primary number vibration, you are one notch ahead in understanding yourself.
And when you understand yourself better and can come to terms with it, you are actually closer towards knowing what you should do in life, finding your life’s purpose or passion.
As best as I can, I will share the key interpretation of each Character Root Number, explaining how each number should think and act.
I hope by the end of this article, you will bring back something of value that you can work on.

How to Calculate Your Character Root Number / Life Path Number
Before we begin, you should know how to calculate your Character Root Number or Life Path number.
The quick calculation is taking your date of birth, summing up each digit and reducing it into a single number.
For example, suppose your date of birth is 6 October 1986, the calculation to derive your Character Root Number is:
Character Root Number = 0+6+1+0+1+9+8+6 = 31 = 3+1 = 4
Hence, you are a Character Root Number or Life Path number 4 individual.
A longer method to obtain your Character Root Number will also help you to work out your Pythagorean Inverted Triangle Numerology chart, which shows you your entire numerological profile.
For this, you can refer to my earlier blog to learn how to derive your numerology chart if you are not familiar with it yet.
So I hope you now have your Character Root Number handy. You can scroll down directly to the section that is relevant to you to save some time reading.
But feel free to have a read on the other Character Root Numbers especially if you have people close to you and you want to explore how you can help them.
Character Root Number 1 – Leader
The mnemonic of the Character Root Number 1 is the Leader.
But it doesn’t necessarily mean a number 1 individual will be a leader. It is more like having the qualities of one.
Quoting from Colin Powell, a U.S. General and Statesman, he says, “Command is Lonely”.
So a number 1 individual can be a leader in their own right, but they can also be somewhat of a loner—or more positively put, highly independent.
Being a Character Root Number 1 often indicates a strong-willed personality with a tendency toward dominance or even autocratic behaviour.
These are assertive leadership qualities.
Steve Jobs, for example, was a Character Root Number 1.
Tuning back nearly 300 years ago, George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte were both Character Root Number 1.
Each of them were leaders in their own unique way.
But it’s not always about leading troops or heading a company. Consider Ronny Chieng, a Malaysian comedian thriving in the U.S.; he’s also a Character Root Number 1.
It’s about the mindset and the way they approach life—not necessarily the traditional image of leadership.
A number 1 individual is generally someone who doesn’t like to be told what to do (even though they know they sometimes need it).
They do not need too many details and prefer having the key points for them to make decisions and act.
So if you are a Character Root Number 1, either you climb up the corporate ladder to be in management, run your own business, or choose to be a professional working independently.
It is very broad, almost as if I didn’t you anything.
What you need to do is marry up with what you are capable of doing right now, what you intend to upskill yourself, knowing what your passion is, or what you are excited about or interested in.
And try to understand the rest of your numbers in your numerology chart, to gain a fuller insight into your character.
When you know yourself better and connect the dots with other things about you, you start to form a picture in your mind about your possibilities.
But you need to act and not just read this and pass it on to do something else.
Repeatedly spend time to do reflection.
Character Root Number 2 – Communicator
For Character Root Number 2, the mnemonic I’ve given that best describes the nature of this number vibration is the Communicator.
If you are born as a Character Root Number 2, know that your voice is your greatest asset.
You will naturally do well in situations that require you to talk to people.
Hence, finding your success means utilising this birthright you have inherited to the fullest.
What do you really want?
What is your passion? What do you enjoy doing?
As a Character Root Number 2 individual, consider occupations that emphasise communication.
A career in sales is highly suitable for a Character Root Number 2 person. Many people I know who are into selling products or services have a number 2 in their numerology chart.
So note that if your numerological profile has a number 2 somewhere in your chart, it already defines you as a person better at communication than those without.
You can also consider a career in coaching or build up to become a motivational speaker over time.
Famous motivational coaches such as Tony Robbins, the late Bob Proctor and Napoleon Hill belong to Character Root Number 2.
If you just want to be a good corporate citizen, then know that your strength lies in communication.
So if you align with what you are currently doing or have a desire to work towards a particular role in the near future, know that your positioning or your way of delivering value to society is to inspire, motivate, and provide clear communication to people.
But if you feel that you are not that great at expressing yourself yet, take comfort that it is much easier for you to improve on this natural talent than those without the number 2.
Character Root Number 3 – Energiser
The mnemonic given for Character Root Number 3 that best describes this number vibration is the Energiser.
You can associate the number 3 with an Energizer battery, or visualise the number 3 as a pair of horseshoes, symbolising the horse galloping.
In essence, the number 3 is an action taker. It is a fire element when we understand it in conjunction with the Chinese Five Elements Theory.
Fire creates movement or propulsion. Fire transforms things. It can create or destroy.
So Character Root Number 3 individuals like to be in action and love to do things fast. He is also a creative being looking to build new things and gain progress as quickly as he can.
Hence, he doesn’t like to wait and can be impatient.
Given such primary characteristics, what Character Root Number 3 individuals should strive for in life is to focus more on creative activities.
This is a very wide scope, but considering the difference between doing, talking, and thinking, the role of a Character Root Number 3 person is to focus more on the doing. Bring your ideas into reality.
You will do well as a changemaker.
Creating something for a Character Root Number 3 in a natural sense can mean spanning from the construction of physical buildings to building digital assets.
The latter can range from building an entire digital platform, software product, movies, or pretty much anything digital as the name suggests.
Jackie Chan and Jack Ma are both Character Root Number 3 individuals, for instance.
Think about what you are doing now as a profession. Is that something you are passionate about? If yes, keep going.
If not, what excites you that can add value to the society? Take action to work towards that goal.
Character Root Number 4 – Mastermind
For Character Root Number 4, the mnemonic I’ve given that best describes the nature of this number vibration is the Mastermind.

Most importantly, you need to marry up with what you are passionate about and apply your natural talent of a number 4.
Character Root Number 5 – Conqueror
The Character Root Number 5 is given a mnemonic of the Conqueror, where it sits in the middle of the nine numbers.
We may visualise it as the leader of leaders where it is flanked or supported by the numbers 1 to 4 on the left and 6 to 9 on the right.
A number 5 tends to embody a mix of characteristics from various numbers, trying to take on a bit of everyone’s traits.
As a result, it is both ambitious and adventurous, always seeking new experiences. It loves freedom and doesn’t like to be controlled or told what to do.
But the number 5, being an Earth element, can also act as a stabiliser, striving to connect with and understand everyone or everything around them.
Given this dynamic nature, discovering a clear purpose in life can be more challenging for those who are Character Root Number 5.
They are often multi-talented and possess the mindset that they can be anything they set their minds to. Staying committed to a single path or purpose can be difficult for them.
If you are a Character Root Number 5, finding out what you really want to do in life can mean trying out as many things as you possibly can.
The culmination of your various adventures and experiences will help you formulate an eventual realisation of what you finally want to do in life.
Choose a domain you’re passionate about, focus on mastering the topic, and explore ways to deliver value through it.
Remember, the number 5 vibration is associated with the Earth element. It’s all about exploration while also serving as a stabilising force.

For a Character Root Number 6, the mnemonic “Sage” is used to encapsulate its essence. This number’s vibration symbolises wisdom, which inherently attracts wealth and abundance.
Other characteristics of a number 6 vibration include being family-oriented, sentimental and having high standards.
A Character Root Number 6 individual possesses a greater ability to see the bigger picture and anticipate what lies ahead, making them a natural strategist.
Such foresight opens doors to opportunities, allowing them to identify potential advantages or pitfalls, prepare for challenges, and make well-informed decisions that pave the way for success.
With this unique strength in mind, how can you, as a Character Root Number 6, best harness and utilise this talent?
Being in business can be a good approach, as the number 6 represents wealth and is a metal element.
Or you may prefer to be a professional. A number 6 is well-suited for managing money, so consider occupations that may delve into this area.

But ultimately, discovering what you want to do in life requires aligning with your passions. Recognise that the unique gift you’ve inherited from your birth date is the ability to think several steps ahead—a trait that can open countless doors.

Character Root Number 7 – Celebrity

As the name suggests, a celebrity is charismatic and engaging. They tend to attract people to them or can mingle easily into a group.
Essentially, a Character Root Number 7 is a people person. They are loyal to their friends and have a greater sense of justice.
So if you are a Character Root Number 7 type, your strength lies in your natural ability to connect with people.
You simply have that magnetism that draws people to like you.
What are you doing now as your profession? Or are you running a business?
Are you already aware of this unique ability that you have inherited?
What you want to do in life is really to make good use of this natural talent.
Align it with your interests and passion so that you can truly magnify this strength.
Now, you may still be in the process of discovering your purpose in life.
What we can potentially narrow down is that you thrive in the company of people.
You probably don’t want to be in a desk-bound job, unless you are frequently on Zoom or Microsoft Team meetings.
But I think a number 7 character should do well as a project manager (which can be quite desk-bound, depending on the industry).
So unless you literally want to be a celebrity—like Taylor Swift, who happens to be a Character Root Number 7—take some time to reflect on your current circumstances and what truly excites you.

As the name suggests, a Guardian is someone who takes on the duty of protection. This role is all about embracing responsibilities and facing challenges head-on.
As such, a Character Root Number 8 may appear to lead a relatively stressful life. However, it’s all a matter of perspective.
Being responsible means you are someone people can rely on, which naturally earns you their trust.
Your willingness to take on challenges showcases your courage and tenacity—a form of leadership in itself.
No matter the path you choose in life, you are more likely to find yourself in leadership roles.

For example, technology represents the fire element, financial management aligns with the metal element, and education is tied to the wood element.

Individuals with a Character Root Number 9 possess keen business acumen.
They’re not only optimistic and visionary but are also quick to seize opportunities as they arise.

Reflect on your past experiences — both successes and setbacks. Often, the opportunities that align with your passions are the ones that bring you the most joy and satisfaction.
You can also analyse the rest of your numbers in your numerology chart to draw further insights into your self-reflection journey.
