Numerology of Gemstones

How do we determine the numerology of gemstones? By this, I mean the vibrational number (a.k.a Character Root Number or Life Path Number) of the gemstones and their meanings. Is there a mathematical formula to calculate this number?

If you are reading this article, chances are you are seeking answers on this too. If not, simply curious.

There are many views on the healing energies of the gemstones, be it from Astrology, Chakra healing, Reiki, Feng Shui, Numerology, etc. But who came up with the meanings?

So in this article, I would like to share my experience on how I form my views on the gemstone meanings and also three ways how we can derive the vibration number of the gemstones.


Rationalising the Gemstone Meanings

There are hundreds of different gemstone varieties in the world where each gemstone has its specific vibrational healing energies. However, you may find that the description of each gemstone’s energy properties may differ across various websites or books.

And to answer the question of who decided on the gemstone meanings, unfortunately, none could be found. However, it is theorised that the meanings are developed across thousands of years, documented through various trials and experiences.

In my studies across many sources, what I notice is that some sources may provide a brief and to-the-point description, while others may have a lengthy write-up of its benefits.

Different gemstone or crystal experts have their own views or style of presenting their opinion with regards to the gemstone’s energy properties or benefits.

Numerology of Gemstones - Keep It Simple

I prefer a short and simple description of the energy properties of each gemstone. Hence, in my previous article, Gemstone And Their Meanings, I have sought to find common meanings across the various sources that I have analysed and summarise them for you.

It helps me to ringfence from bias or inaccuracies on the energy properties of each gemstone.

By comparing against various gemstone sources, we can get a conservative common understanding of the gemstone energy properties that people will agree with. This method may miss some of the energy properties discovered by different gemstone or crystal experts. But I would prefer to go for a conservative approach.


3 Ways to Determine the Vibration Numbers of Gemstones

Upon compiling a common set of gemstone meanings, this is where we can correlate and categorise to which Character Root Number (a.k.a. Vibration Number or Life Path Number) the gemstones may belong to or be associated with.

This is also the first way to determine the Character Root Number of a gemstone by aligning the gemstone meaning with the Character Root Number meaning.

To learn about the meaning of the Character Root Numbers, you can refer to my earlier post on Numerology Number Meanings.

If you understand the meaning of the numbers, you will roughly get a sense of which Character Root Number(s) a gemstone may belong to when you read the gemstone meaning.

But there could be a faster way to this. And that is where I see two other ways to calculate the Character Root Number of a gemstone.

And these two ways are to use the name and chemical formula of the gemstones, respectively.

Let’s explore the three methods. And we will use three gemstones for illustration purposes, namely, amethyst, hematite, and labradorite.


Vibration Number of Gemstones by alignment of meanings

The first method is comparing the meaning of the gemstone versus the Character Root Numbers / Vibration Numbers.

However, this method can be subjective. Unless you are clear with the meaning of the Character Root Numbers, it may be harder for you to associate the vibrational energy properties of a gemstone with the positive and negative traits of the Character Root Number.

Furthermore, the interpretation of the meaning of the Character Root Numbers versus the meaning of a gemstone can vary from person to person.

And the energies of a gemstone can be associated with multiple Character Root Numbers.

Let’s look at the common vibrational energy properties of amethyst, hematite, and labradorite.

Amethyst

Below presents the common vibrational energy properties of amethyst.

  • Promotes stability, peace, calmness, and balance
  • Provides clarity of mind to help you make wiser decisions
  • Protection against negative thoughts
  • Increase charm and attractiveness

Amethyst is quite a versatile semi-precious gemstone where you may find the energy properties aligning across multiple Character Root Numbers. That is most likely the reason why it is also one of the most popular gemstones around.

I would see amethyst be compatible with Character Root Number 3 (Energizer), 4 (Mastermind), 5 (Conqueror), 6 (Sage), 7 (Celebrity), and 8 (Guardian).

To associate amethyst with a definitive Character Root Number does not do justice to the wide-ranging energy properties that it carries.

Hematite

Below presents the common vibrational energy properties of hematite.

  • Grounds your mind to a calming state, enabling you to concentrate, focus, and organise yourself better.
  • Enhances your logical thinking and planning abilities

By looking at the above description, we can see that hematite is aligned closely with Character Root Number 4, the Mastermind.

Labradorite

Below presents the common vibrational energy properties of labradorite.

  • Sharpens intuition and ignites your imagination and creativity, bringing rise to new ideas or solutions
  • Calms an overactive mind and manages your fear, insecurities, anxiety, or stress.

From the description of the energy properties above, labradorite is aligned closely with Character Root Number 6, the Sage. But it can also be used by other Character Root Number personalities such as numbers 4 and 8.


Vibration Number of Gemstones by Names

Similar to how we may use our names to translate into numbers in Numerology, we can also use the same method to convert the gemstone name into numbers and derive the Character Root Number.

Below presents the translation of the roman alphabets into their respective numbers.

Let’s proceed to illustrate how to derive the Character Root Number, using amethyst, hematite, and labradorite as examples.

And we will then compare the characteristics of the derived Character Root Number versus the common vibrational energy properties of the gemstones.

Amethyst

AMETHYST

Taking the sum of the translation above, 1+4+5+2+8+7+1+2 = 30 = 3+0 = 3

Therefore, amethyst has the Character Root Number of 3 using this method.

The Character Root Number 3 refers to the Energizer. On the negative side, a person with a Character Root Number 3 may be impatient and rash. They can also be temperamental and loses their cool.

The common vibrational energy properties of amethyst are as follows:

  • Promotes stability, peace, calmness, and balance
  • Provides clarity of mind to help you make wiser decisions
  • Protection against negative thoughts
  • Increase charm and attractiveness

If you agree with this comparison, a Character Root Number 3 personality will benefit from acquiring an amethyst to ground his / her temper.

Hematite

Taking the sum of the translation above, 8+5+4+1+2+9+2+5 = 36 = 3+6 = 9

Therefore, hematite has the Character Root Number of 9 using this method.

The Character Root Number 9 refers to the Entrepreneur. On the negative side, a person with a Character Root Number 9 may lack focus, feels alone, fear failure, being lazy, or greedy.

The common vibrational energy properties of hematite are as follows:

  • Grounds your mind to a calming state, enabling you to concentrate, focus, and organise yourself better.
  • Enhance your logical thinking and planning abilities.

A Character Root Number 9 personality can benefit from acquiring hematite to curb his negative energies.

Labradorite

Taking the sum of the translation above, 3+1+2+9+1+4+6+9+9+2+5 = 51 = 5+1 = 6

Therefore, labradorite has the Character Root Number of 6.

The Character Root Number 6 refers to the Sage. On the negative side, a person with this Character Root Number can be a risk-taker, impatient, arrogant, materialistic, and has strong self-esteem.

The common vibrational energy properties of labradorite are as follows:

  • Sharpens intuition and ignites your imagination and creativity bringing rise to new ideas or solutions
  • Calms an overactive mind and manages your fear, insecurities, anxiety, or stress.

You may notice that the vibrational energy properties of labradorite do not address the negative characteristics of a Character Root Number 6 personality.

Instead, it seems to be better at augmenting the positive characteristics of a Character Root Number 6, which are wisdom, adventuring spirit, creativity, family-oriented, intelligence, and discipline.


Vibration Number of Gemstones by Chemical Formula

In my research, I have yet to come across publications that attempt to use the chemical formula of the gemstone to derive a vibration number. I believe very few people have given thought to this.

But if we think about it further, Numerology is about finding meaning from numbers. And in our calculation, we reduce the numbers down to a single digit, the smallest size possible.

With this in mind, gemstones like hematite or amethyst are words, and we translate the alphabets to numbers and reduce the numbers to single digits.

However, hematite or amethyst are English words. What happens when the gemstones are translated to other languages such as French, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Mandarin, or Japanese?

The result of converting a gemstone in different languages into numbers will be different.

For example, amethyst is the English form, and the translation will be as follows:

  • French – améthyste
  • Portuguese – ametista
  • Japanese – アメジスト(Amejisuto)
  • Russian – аметист (ametist)
  • Korean – 자수정 (jasujeong)
  • Chinese – 紫晶 (Zǐ jīng)

You get the drift. The calculation of the vibration number based on language differences will become different.

And that is where the idea of using the chemical formula comes about.

Each gemstone has its own composition, making up of different chemical elements.

Numerology of Gemstones - Periodic Table

And the chemical elements, hence the chemical formulas, are universally applied regardless of language differences. Words like amethyst, hematite, and labradorite are spelled differently across languages.

We may therefore see the chemical formula as the true name of the gemstone.

With this concept in mind, it also helps to bring us closer to understand the energy of the gemstone. In a sense, we are applying metaphysics and science together.

Using amethyst, hematite, and labradorite as illustration again, the chemical formula for each of these gemstones are as follows:

  • Amethyst – SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide)
  • Hematite – Fe2O3 (Iron Oxide)
  • Labradorite – (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)4O8

Let’s look at the calculation of the Character Root Number based on the chemical formula.

Amethyst – SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide)

From the above, the Character Root Number of SiO2 will be 1+9+6+6 = 22 = 2+2 = 4

The positive and negative characteristics of a Character Root Number 4 personality are summarised as follows:

Positive

  • Intelligent
  • Great planning skills
  • Values beauty

Negative

  • Impatient
  • Insecure
  • Very much concerned with his/her reputation

And to recap, the common vibrational energy or healing properties of amethyst are as follows:

  • Promotes stability, peace, calmness, and balance
  • Provides clarity of mind to help you make wiser decisions
  • Protection against negative thoughts
  • Increase charm and attractiveness

Promoting stability, peace, calmness, and balance will help to address the potential impatience of a Character Root Number 4 personality.

Providing clarity of mind to make wiser decision seeks to enhance his/her intelligence and planning skills.

Protection against negative thoughts seeks to shield the insecurity he/she might have.

Increasing charm and attractiveness helps to improve his/her confidence and therefore helps in enhancing or maintaining their reputation.

And if you noticed, when we calculate the Character Root Number of amethyst via its name or by its chemical formula, the vibrational energy properties will help both Character Root Number 3 and 4 personalities.

Hematite – Fe2O3 (Iron Oxide)

From the above, the Character Root Number of Fe2O3 will work out to be 6+5+6+5+6+6+6=40 = 4+0 = 4

Let’s put together the characteristics of Character Root Number 4 and the common vibrational energy properties of hematite for ease of reference.

Character Root Number 4 Positive and Negative Characteristics

Positive

  • Intelligent
  • Great planning skills
  • Values beauty

Negative

  • Impatient
  • Insecure
  • Very much concerned with his/her reputation

Common Vibrational Energy Properties of Hematite

  • Grounds your mind to a calming state, enabling you to concentrate, focus, and organise yourself better.
  • Enhance your logical thinking and planning abilities.

I do not think I need to elaborate too much here. Hematite is very suitable to help enhance and suppress the positive and negative energies of a Character Root Number 4, respectively.

Having assessed the Character Root Number of hematite via the name or chemical formula, we can see that it is suitable for use by both Character Root Number 9 and 4 personalities.

Labradorite – (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)4O8

From the above, the Character Root Number of Labradorite based on chemical formula will be 3+1+5+1+(1+3+1+9) x 4 + 6 x 8 = 114 = 1+1+4 = 6

And in this case, be it deriving the Character Root Number via the name or chemical formula, both methods will arrive at the same result.

Hence, we can say that Labradorite is most suitable for a Character Root Number 6.


Which Method Should We Use?

Let’s look at a summary of the three methods in the table below.

So which method should we use? From the above table, it seems that using chemical formula has a better match with the meanings.

However, as I looked at the calculation of the other gemstones, this result does not always hold true.

In my opinion, we should consider all three methods to give us a better appreciation of how a gemstone can help people of different Character Root Numbers.

When we look at the overall Numerology Chart of a person, we may also observe what numbers (hence the energy properties) are missing from our inherited numbers and seek to add on by acquiring the relevant gemstones.

Furthermore, no one method is perfect, so utilising all three methods serves as good due diligence.

Getting the vibrational number of gemstones by chemical formula is quite astonishing. It was surprising to get the results similar to the three ways. I think there should be more research on the subject so it becomes scientific and more acceptable.

    • Hi Gaurav, thanks for dropping by. Using the gemstone chemical formula provides a universal approach to determine the vibrational number. And it helps us to go deeper into the individual chemical composition of the gemstone. 

      From my research, it is not always the case that the results are similar to the other methods. We do need more study on this, but I would say the use of the chemical formula can be a better option than the traditional method of using the name of the gemstone to calculate the vibration number.

  2. Well said for my favorite gemstone, Amethyst. I never think that we can also use numerology for our gemstone instead of our name. It’s quite interesting that there are various ways to calculate it, especially using the composition of the stones. I agree that using chemical formula has a better match the meaning, but it makes it a bit harder to calculate other gemstones. Well, time do some research for my other favorite gemstones: Sapphire.

Nevertheless, the formula can be easily obtained with a search in Google. 🙂 And the significance is there where we go more granular down to the elements and overcome the language differences too. 🙂

    Looking through your article I like it when you describe and explain in-dept how through gems you can determine which gems are most suitable for you.

    To determine the character of a gems stone by aligning the gemstone- this is really impressive, wow blow my mind. I never thought it could be so meaningful to know through math how to read a stone.

    To be honest and please excuse me, I have no experience to offer regarding this topic. I love to know and learn more about it but unfortunately, no experience.

    By comparing the gemstone with the vibration numbers that everyone has their own gems. and every gem has its own vibration this is really interesting. I have to be honest I’ve been looking for mine too, I know now that I have Ametist, thank you so very much.

As still need to read more because Im not sure which method is most reliable but it seems that chemicals formula is most universal. Thank you for bringing this fascinating topic to my attention.
