Gemstones are known to have healing properties. While there is no scientific proof of its healing powers, people are still attracted to it. Some advocates swear by its healing powers. Or others feel good to own one or many different gemstones either for their beauty or to feel at ease. So what are the various gemstones and their meanings that exist on our planet?
But what have gemstones got to do with Numerology?
Gemstones are commonly associated with Astrology, Feng Shui, or other types of pseudosciences or metaphysics. And this is because of the positive energies or qi associated with it. On the same front, Numerology looks at the positive and negative energies of the numbers we have inherited or acquired. We may therefore apply gemstones in Numerology as a way to improve our well-being.
How do we know which gemstones to use from a Numerology standpoint to augment the positive energies that you possess from the numbers that you have? Or how do we use gemstones to neutralise or soften the negative energies that may exist around us?
This article seeks to answer the above questions.

The Difference Between Gemstones and Crystals
As I research more into the world of gemstones, I find that it will be useful to dig deeper into the background.
One confusion that I had was the terminology between gemstones and crystals. Many times, different people may call the same stone a gemstone or crystal.
Hence, I would like to clarify the difference between the terms gemstones and crystals. You will find that some websites or physical shops would use the term crystals, while others may use gemstones. But you will then realise that they are all talking about the same thing.
So before I begin this study to link gemstones and Numerology together, it seems that the terms gemstone and crystal are interchangeable.
Do you think so too? Or do you think they can be different? If so, what are the differences?
To begin with, we have to remember that a gemstone can be a crystal, but not all crystals can be a gemstone.
The easiest way to understand is that salt and sugar are crystals, but you wouldn’t call them a gemstone, right?
What is a Gemstone?
A gemstone, as the name suggests, is a rare and high-quality mineral. Thus, it can be worth a lot.
Gemstones are categorised into 2 types, precious and semi-precious.
Precious gemstones always come from single minerals. There are only 4 types of gemstones that are considered precious, and these are diamonds, emeralds, ruby, and sapphire. Anything else is deemed semi-precious.
However, it does not mean that a semi-precious gemstone is worth lesser than a precious gemstone.
Semi-precious gemstones, on the other hand, may be derived from a single mineral or multiple minerals. Examples of semi-precious gemstones include amethyst, aquamarine, citrine, or garnet.
And this was what confused me before where, for example, I have heard people calling amethyst a crystal, a gemstone, or calls them both at the same time!
But from my research, I can now confirm that amethyst is called a semi-precious gemstone.
So.
What is a Crystal?
A crystal is a solid substance whereby its atoms are structured in a geometrical pattern order.
In crystallography, there are 7 types of crystal lattice systems to categorise the crystals. These are triclinic, monoclinic, orthorhombic, tetragonal, trigonal, hexagonal, and cubic.
And crystals are held together by various types of chemical bond types such as covalent bonds, ionic bonds, and metallic bonds.
As mentioned earlier, all gemstones are crystals, and they fall under one of the 7 types of crystal lattice systems and chemical bond types. For example, hematite, which is a semi-precious gemstone, belongs to the crystal system of trigonal and the covalent chemical bond type. And diamond, being a precious gemstone, belongs to the cubic crystal system and covalent chemical bond type.
In essence, all the pretty looking “stones” that you see can be termed interchangeably either as a crystal or gemstone.
One way to look at it is that people may call gemstones that are translucent or transparent as crystals, basically, those shiny “crystal-like” ones. Examples of these are ametrine or amethyst. It also depends on the shape, whether it is “stone-like” or “crystal-like.”
Gemstones that are opaque such as hematite or jasper may be called semi-precious gemstones or just gemstones.
So there you go, that is why people would call the same thing a gemstone or crystal. I would say it depends on the shape and looks of the mineral.
Another way to differentiate the way we call stones to be crystals or gemstones maybe by the way we judge on their luster, colour, and natural shape versus cut, clarity, and purity, respectively.
I hope this section has helped to provide you with a good idea of when to say it is a gemstone and when it is a crystal.
Where Are The World’s Gemstones Found?
And I thought it would be interesting to know where are all the gemstones found in the world.
Alas, most of the gemstones are available in many parts of the world. There can be more than 430 different variations of gemstones, depending on the mix of the minerals.
And this would be understandable since most gemstones are formed in the Earth’s crust, about 5 to 40 km beneath the Earth’s surface. On the other hand, diamonds are generally found 150-250km beneath the Earth’s surface.
Hence, there will always be gemstone deposits below us, just a matter of whether there is more or less and whether it is worth the effort to mine.
Few countries stand out being famous for gemstones. And these are Brazil, Sri Lanka, and India. Other countries that mines and supplies gemstones will include:
- Afghanistan
- Armenia
- Australia
- Austria
- Britain
- Burma
- Canada
- Chile
- China
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Egypt
- Finland
- France
- Gabon
- Germany
- Indonesia
- Iran
- Israel
- Kazakhstan
- Kenya
- Libya
- Malawi
- Mexico
- Mozambique
- Myanmar
- Namibia
- Nigeria
- Norway
- Pakistan
- Peru
- Poland
- Russia
- Siberia
- Slovakia
- South Africa
- South Korea
- Sweden
- Tanzania
- Ukraine
- United States
- Uruguay
- Venezuela
- Zambia
But does it matter to know which country your gemstones came from?
In my opinion, unless you are buying a very expensive gemstone or you have a particular preference, it really doesn’t matter. And usually, the information on where the gemstone came from is not available anyway.
And from one source that I have read, being told the country of origin of a gemstone is more of a marketing tool than having any value.
However, it may be worth knowing a bit more if you are buying a precious gemstone or any semi-precious gemstone that has a hefty price tag. The seller should have such information available. You might also want to spend on getting a lab report to have an accurate valuation.
Gemstones Energy Properties
What is more critical from a positive energy perspective is that the gemstones should ideally come from a natural source and not artificial. I think you will agree with me that we want to benefit from the gemstone’s energy that comes naturally from the earth and not artificially or synthetically manufactured from a lab or factory.
However, man-made gemstones can be less costly than natural ones and may look more beautiful. And it is because such synthetic gemstones are grown in a controlled environment, thus they will usually have fewer inclusions and are more vivid in their colours compared to their natural counterparts.
Plus, they are chemically or structurally identical to the natural gemstones found inside the earth’s crust. Hence in principle, since the chemical makeup is the same as the natural gemstones, the energy properties should be the same.
Nevertheless, getting a natural gemstone is still the most ideal case. Imperfections can be beautiful too.
So, in other words, synthetic gemstones should look more aesthetically pleasing. If looks are your priority, then it doesn’t matter if the gemstone is a natural or synthetic source.
But if you are concerned with the energy properties that your gemstone can bring you, try to ask your sellers for the gemstone origin they are selling.
However, you may not need to worry that much. Sometimes, it is the stones that find you. You may, therefore, have a collection of gemstones over time. And you might be able to sense that certain gemstones feel more powerful than others as time goes by.
Usage And Types Of Gemstone Products
How then do we harness and benefit from the energies of the gemstones?
By having the right gemstones placed around you or carried with you, you will benefit from their energy properties depending on what type of energy you want to enhance for yourself.
You may place the gemstones as a decorative piece on your desk or anywhere in your house. Or, if you are frequently on the roads, you can display it on your vehicle’s dashboard or hang it on your rear mirror.
If you prefer wearables, having gemstone bracelets, necklaces, pendants, rings, or earrings are the common ideas for the ladies. The recent new inclusion would be the face mask chains.
I find it less common for men, but the available gemstone options are bracelets, rings, and cuff links.
Other options to enhance your energies from the gemstones are gemstone keychains and water bottles.
Once you have your gemstones, you will want to communicate with it to connect with the energies that it brings. Knowing the meaning of the gemstones is therefore essential, and feel how the energy flows around and inside you.
Meaning Of The Gemstones From A Numerology Perspective
With so many different types and variations of gemstones in the world, it is a tough choice to decide which one is suitable for you if you want to benefit from its energy properties.
What you may also find is that many gemstones have similar energy properties.
And this is good since it gives you a variety of gemstones of different colours to choose from.
What is essential to know is the meaning of the various gemstones, how they may benefit you, and which ones you like the most.
I started by understanding how many different types of gemstones are there in the world. In the beginning, I found 211 variations. But as I delve further, it expanded to 430 variations. And I am very sure the number of gemstone variations is more than that.
It will be a long journey to truly appreciate all the different gemstones, and I salute the researchers who have spent years in the fields of gemology or crystallography.
So in this section, I will be looking at just a number of the common gemstones. And you will find the summary meanings for each of them in the respective tables below and which Character Root Number they should belong to from a Numerology perspective.
Do you know which Character Root Number you belong to? If not, you can refer to my earlier article on calculating your Numerology chart here.

Thank you for defining gemstone versus crystal. It’s helpful to know that a gemstone can be a crystal, but not all crystals can be a gemstone. We have a “rich” mining history in my area and there are plenty of tourist places that offer gem grubbing activities. I love visiting these shops and attractions and feeling the energy of the room full of gems. I thought I might have gravitated to the ones that were visually the most interesting, but perhaps there is more at work than that. I’ve enjoyed learning more about the gems here and will reference this page again!
Hi Aly, thank you for dropping by and it is awesome to know that you live in one of the mining areas!
I love all the gemstones. I have the love stone ring right now and I do believe that they do me good. It can be placebo or it just works. I also love the Aquamarine, a big one right by my bed. It just started with I love the color but it just made me relax and I think that it is true. I have to go get myself some Blue Aventurine just to enhance my leadership. Thanks for sharing this awesome meaning!
Hi Nuttanee, thanks for stopping by and reading this article. Glad to know you are a gemstone lover. Good to know you intend to get yourself some Blue Aventurine to enhance your leadership. But perhaps you might also want to calculate your Numerology chart and see if you are indeed lacking the number 1. Let me know if you need some help. 🙂
This was very interesting information on gemstones, where they come from, the countries they are mined in, and the various properties. I skimmed thru the gemstones you have listed and did not see the one I was looking for which is okay. I plan on doing a web search on it now and see what it says about it. Thanks for the interesting information.
Hi Leahrae, thanks for reading and finding this article interesting. Yes, there are many gemstones and, unfortunately, I can’t cover them all. But do let me know which gemstone you are searching for and I would be glad to add it in as well. 🙂
Thank you so much for this article, I find gemstones fascinating as I have been a jeweler my entire life, I know that some of these gemstones are not all used for jewelry manufacturing, nevertheless, it’s awesome to know where they actually come from. I have never heard of the sunstone though, but I love the meaning behind it. Great article. Take care!
Hi Jean, thanks for reading and glad you like it!
This is an absolutely fascinating post on gemstones and their meanings and the connection to numerology. I now have a very clear idea about the difference between gemstones and crystals, and also what semi-precious and precious gemstones are.
I agree with you that if you want to harness the natural power and qualities of gemstones, then it is essential to have a natural stone, and not a synthetic one. This is a great post.
Hi LineCowley, thank you for reading. Glad you enjoy it. 🙂
This is very interesting and insightful.
Personally unless it is natural I do not see it as being real.
I didn’t realise that they were found in so many countries. Perhaps I need to start digging in my back garden. But it appears that I will need a very deep hole.
Your description of the properties of the various stones is very helpful in deciding which ones to buy.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
Hi Geoff, thank you for reading and find this interesting and insightful. I share the same sentiments as you. Unless it is natural, I do not see the gemstone as being real.
